NGO Maailmakodanik (in English World Citizen) was officially established in August 2004 when it was registered as a non-governmental organisation in Estonia. Maailmakodanik is an organisation uniting the former volunteers of European Voluntary Service (EVS), the ones who have gained their experience in this EU Youth program and are willing and interested in sharing their experience and supporting current and future volunteers of EVS
The main objectives of Maailmakodanik are following:
- To promote EVS – an EU incentive to allow young people to test
themselves in new cultural environment, gain new knowledge and
experience, learn about themselves, grow more independent etc
- Contribute to the integration of Estonian youth to European Union and introduce Estonia in EU
- Promote citizen initiative among young people of Estonia
- Develop co-operation with organisations with the same target group
- Unite ex-volunteers of EVS
For this reason Maailmakodanik:
-
Organises seminars, lectures, seminars and entertaining co-activities
-
Communicates and co-operates with other organisations in Estonia and abroad
-
Applies for means and support and uses it according to statutory objectives
-
Gathers, systematises and spreads information on EVS.
These goals are put into practice by number of activities. The
representatives of Maailmakodanik take part in the pre-departure,
on-arrival and mid-term seminars for new volunteers of EVS organised by
the Estonian National Agency, inform foreign volunteers about culture
events in Estonia, popularize volunteer service among young people via
personal contacts and through different promotional activities and
organise different gathering for former Estonian and current EVS
volunteers doing their project in Estonia.
The advice, support and attention is always present for all those who
are interesting on doing EVS, for the Estonian EVS volunteers abroad
and foreign volunteers in Estonia. The presence of support is also
vital for the young people who have completed their project and have
returned to the home country as the culture shock is likely to be even
stronger then starting their independent life in a foreign country.
Information (seminars, reunions, contacts etc) and stories of
experience will be presented in the web page of Maailmakodanik that
will be completed and made open to the public in the near future.
In its activities NGO Maailmakodanik co-operates closely with Estonian
National Agency that operates EVS as well as other sub-programmes of
European Youth programme. The contacts are also formed with Finnish
organisation Ikineuvot that unites former EVS volunteers of Finland.
Two bilateral projects have already been agreed on that will be carried
out within next half a year.
